This is a starting draft prepared for an Icelandic tour operator. It must be reviewed and approved by someone qualified before the site goes live.
Who we are
Scenic Iceland ehf., registered in Iceland, is the data controller for personal data collected through happyiceland.is. Reach us at info@happyiceland.is or +354 765 8085.
What we collect, and why we are allowed to
| Data | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Name, email, phone, travel details | To run the tour you booked | Performance of a contract |
| Whatever you type into the contact form | To answer your question | Legitimate interest in replying to you |
| Chosen language and currency | So the site opens the way you left it | Strictly necessary for a service you asked for |
| Which pages are visited, with your IP address shortened | To count visits and see which pages need work | Legitimate interest — no cookies, and you cannot be recognised |
| How the site is used; which ads brought you here | To improve the site and measure advertising | Your consent |
Cookies
Essential cookies run the site: they remember your language, your currency and your booking session. They are set without asking because the site cannot work without them.
Visit counting runs on Matomo, installed on our own server at stats.happyiceland.is. It sets no cookies, shortens your IP address before storing it, does not follow you to other sites, and is never combined with other data. Because it cannot recognise you from one visit to the next, it runs without asking first.
Everything else waits for your permission. When you first arrive you are asked to accept or to keep only the essentials, and both choices are one click. You can change your mind at any time through the Cookie settings link in the footer. Choosing essentials only does not limit what you can book.
Who else sees your data
- Bokun (a TripAdvisor company) takes the booking and the payment. Its booking widget runs inside our pages and loads Google Maps, New Relic and Amplitude from their own servers; those may set their own cookies. Prices in the widget are charged in Icelandic krona.
- OpenStreetMap serves the map tiles. Loading a map reveals your IP address to them.
- Hostinger hosts the site and our Matomo statistics, and therefore stores everything above on our behalf.
- The tour operator running your trip, where that is not us, receives the details needed to carry it out.
Some of these providers are outside the European Economic Area. Where that is the case, transfers rely on the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
We do not sell personal data.
How long we keep it
Booking records are kept for seven years, which is what Icelandic accounting law requires. Contact-form enquiries are deleted once the conversation is finished. Consent choices are stored for six months, after which you are asked again. Visit statistics are kept for 25 months.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you may ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to restrict how we use it, take it elsewhere in a portable form, or object to processing based on our legitimate interests. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting what we did before.
Write to info@happyiceland.is and we will respond within one month. If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Icelandic Data Protection Authority, Persónuvernd (personuvernd.is), or to the authority where you live.
